some interesting afterthoughts on google chrome
now that i’ve hung around a little more with ‘ol chromie (aka Google Chrome), there are sides of me that are not at all happy and sides of me that are.
in no particular order lets see what my pet peeves are first.
- i really liked having a search bar on the right top corner of my browser (google, yahoo, etc..) that really made it very convinient to drag highlighted text straight from a page i’m in, and drop it into the search bar and then open a new tab and click enter to search for it. some might think it an edge case, but i do that ALL THE TIME.
- chromie over here even though is really fast and does all this cool sand boxing and what not still takes up a hell of a lot of memory. firefox would go up to about 70-90mb if i had about 8 tabs open and was running it for about 6 hours without closing the browser, but chrome jumps up to about 70mb with just three tabs open (my blog, facebook, and gmail). not quite sure i like that.
- shame on you google for downloading file links that i click on without prompting me for what i want to do with it. so here i was browsing through a site and i clicked on a link for a product thinking it would take me to its product detail page, but in reality it was a link to a page that then redirected me to the actual download of the trial version for that product and even though i did not want to download it, chrome automatically started downloading the file. for a moment i was confused and though it was somthing to do with the page so i opened up the fox and tried it on that, and sure enough the fox prompted me asking me what i wanted to do with the file. you should know better google!
- i’m still bothered by the fact that the little comment links at the end of facebook’s news feeds don’t work in chrome. i really liked that feature
so now that i’ve gotten that off my chest what do i like about chrome so far:
- i like their treatment of text boxes. alot of web 2.0 companies spend alot of time coding fancy js to make text boxes re-sizable etc.. chrome makes all textarea boxes in any site re-sizable
- did i mention its pretty fast? well it is.
- i havent crashed it yet. this is good.. really it is. i am well known for overloading my browser with so many tabs that it is always crashing on me
- i like the way they took away all the menu options and replaced it with one that has everything you really need. everything else is just legacy stuff that made the whole interface clunky
well thats about all i have for now. lets see what else i fin in the coming days…
Google Chrome – First Impressions
Comments: 4 people have voiced their opinion. What do YOU think?
after a rocky start and some ancious moments where the download on the gears site did not work for me i was shown the path to the actual chrome download at www.google.com/chrome
so now that i’ve been checking it out for about 5-6 hours… what do i think about it. i kida like it. at first glance its fast (loaded my gmail inbox in under a minute. some said this was an unfair test so i tested it with hotmail and yahoo mail as well. pretty damm good)
the install was super fast. the download it self being only some 450kb or something like that.
very easy import of all my bookmarks and other info from firefox.
when i installed chrome firefox was already running so it prompted me to close the fox before it could import my settings. i wonder if it would have asked me if i did not have it running. ben over at his blog mentioned that it did not ask him but since then updated his post since i mentioned that it did prompt me.. but i wonder.. i will have to re-install and test it out.
i kind of like having the tabs above the address bar. and it it just me or does the tabs look more tab like on chrome?
testing it across a few of my fav sites i didnt have any major problem. i did however run into some majoy issues in facebook. with their new redesign them like many other web 2.0 interfaces rely heavily on javascript and sadly alot of their js seemed broken to me in chrome. none of the little comment links in the feeds worked for me. - anyone else with this issue?
Google Chrome download is not working [updated]
Comments: 13 people have voiced their opinion. What do YOU think?
i’m all abuzz about the new google browser since it was announced leaked a day ago. i read the comic. very impressive. my only concern is throughout the offical announcement blog, there was no mention about web standards. i mean it has taken us absolutely forever to come to where we actually have a set of browsers that kinda work together and kinda adhear to w3c web standards on html and css. now we have chrome talking about applications and rendering engines etc… all very interesting stuff but does this mean we are going to have a whole new era of web application inconsistency? i dont know but i sure hope not.
all of this aside. i still want to install and play around with chrome and the download link IS NOT WORKING. why is this happening to me. the link i have is http://gears.google.com/chrome/eula.html?hl=en (after a feverant google search for the download link)
anyone else having the same problem?
UPDATED: thanks linda for this link www.google.com/chrome
what happened to the ebay i knew
i mean honestly what happened to the ebay i knew and loved. the one where i could go and find other people, i mean real people setting stuff. the goals that the ebay founder had in mind in creating ebay has completely been lost in the corporate monster it has become.
it’s rising listing fees along with all the other hundreds of fees that exists make it so complicated and unpractical to use for the average joe who is trying to sell something thats been gathering dust in his garage.
i know the few times i’ve tried to sell something i’ve gotten so frustrated that i just exited the process half way through.
all i find when i go to ebay anymore is lots and lots of “super sellers” and stores and estate sales by auction houses etc… and a few individual users scattered far and wide. i mean seriously. its proabably easier to spot a star in the sky from times square in new york than it is to find an individual seller on ebay anymore.
ebay has turned into this huge online mall and quite frankly i don’t know if i like it anymore. i’m sure its not just me and that there are lots of people out there who think the same.

video – bubble magic
looks like i’m in a total video mood these few days like this wonderfully touching dance, but video is fascinating and i was impelled to share it with you all.
you remember as kids when we did something that our parents didn’t want us to do they told us not to do it anymore. to do something more useful with our lives. something we can actually use. utter balderdash. this video proves that you can do what ever you want to, even if its smoking a cigarette cancer stick and blowing bubbles and make something of yourself.
have a look and tell me what you think
video-the perfect dance
ok so sue me. all this olympic shit is making me soppy. i am human after all. i mean comradship, teamwork, support, encouragement etc… you know what i’m talking about.
anyways… i just saw this video that really touched me. its a dance performance that tells the story of all the virtues of the olympics and i just felt that i had to share that with my readers. many of you might already have seen it, but for those who have not, here it is:
[pockets of wisdom] – tips for homemade salad dressing
this post is part of an ongoing series of posts on helpful hints or as i call then pockets of wisdom. if your curious about its intention and or about its sources etc.. or just board and want something interesting to read, check out the first post here.
my mum was a big fan of making salad dressings at home. the easiest being some spices and some fresh herbs mixed with some salt, vinegar and oil. the other day i decided to give it a try and guess what. it did not taste at all good. in fact all i was tasting was the oil and nothing else. i couldn’t for the life of me figure out what i was doing wrong… until i came across this little fact in my email

[pockets of wisdom] – boiling water in a kettle
this is part of an ongoing series of posts on helpful hints or as i call then pockets of wisdom. you can read the first post here to find out the goal for these posts and some background information about then (stuff about sources, etc…)
so one of the problems that some people face when boiling water is getting distracted only to arrive back at the kitchen with the pot/kettle burn and my whole apartment filled with smoke. i have been lucky so far and its never happened to me (except when i was trying to steam something once and i put too little water in the steamer and ended up burning the bottom of the pan a bit). luckily i caught it in time and was able to stop a major disaster from happening.
here is a really easy way to alert you when you start getting close to the danger zone
[pockets of wisdom] – how to clean a badly burn pan
Comments: 2 people have voiced their opinion. What do YOU think?
one of the things i really love is getting some little tit bits of useful information that i can store away and use when i need to. the only problem is that i usually forget what i’ve read or received via email and that information is not use to me anymore, so i’ve decided to write them all down in this blog as part of a “[pockets of wisdom]” series. i hope you will enjoy receiving these pockets of wisdom as much i as do.
most of these come to me via email as forwards or as random facts that don’t belong to any traceable source so pardon the fact that they don’t have references. if i know the source of a particular fact i’ll include it in the posts. if you see a fact without a source and know the source let me know and i will definitely add it to the post.
whos your momma
yipeeeeee its friday!!! i am so psyched. this week lasted way too long for my liking and I cant wait for the weekend to start. in my head it already has and to my utter delight it started with one of the most funniest scenes ever.
i had an early morning (9am) meeting with a client. so i get ready and get there a little early. park my car and start walking towards my clients’ office when i see an interesting scene unfold in front of me.
first i see a dog sniffing at a tree. he seems to be on his own for the most part, which i found to be a little weird. i mean its not like back in sri lanka where the dogs are free and their own masters. able to roam and forage for food at will. here they are domesticated and always belong to an owner. the western world has taken an entire species and make it so that it is illegal and a liability for this once free animal to be its own master. anyways… i digress. back to the story at hand.
there she is. a grumpy looking middle aged woman comes stomping walking by and continues to walk on without so much as looking in the dogs direction (so how do i know she was the dogs owner? simple. she has the leash wrapped in one hand.. smart aren’t i?) so she walks about 20 meters ahead and this nice friendly older gentleman was also strolling around somewhere behind her shows up. the dog noticing the old man sensed that he was friendly and went over with his tail wagging like he was trying to swat a board of flies or something. the old man turning out to be just what he seemed; a friendly old man. so he bent down and started patting the dog.
here’s where it all starts to get very interesting. the woman notices this, turns around and starts shouting at the dog. i forget the name she used but for the sake of the post lets call the dog jack.
Come here jack. What are you doing with him? He is not your mother. I AM your mother. Not him. Come here. Leave him. Don’t you know who your mother is? Remember I’m the one who feeds you everyday… and takes you for walks… me.. I AM YOUR MOTHER. Get over here right now.
it took every bit of strength i had to prevent myself from bursting out in laughter right there.
obviously someone got up on the wrong side of the bed. or not getting any in bed [from the looks of her i’m not surprised] and needed to take it out on someone.. so this poor once free animal had to hear her rant.
i guess it takes all sorts to make this world what is it.
