On a US domestic Flight

I find myself flying again, and it never ceases to amaze me how the mighty have fallen. On my US Airways flight the once free pretzels they gave as snacks are not there anymore. You can buy a snack box that has “Premium” snacks in it for $7.00. I’m surprised they still give you something to drink for free. Thankfully this time around i picked up a decent deli sandwich before boarding the plane. The last time around I forgot to do that and ended up buying one of the gourmet inspired “Hot” sandwiches. It was one of the driest, blandest, and worse tasting sandwich ever. it was not even HOT.

I miss flying airlines like Malaysian, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Sri Lankan Airlines and the like where you actually looked forward to the food and its FREE. Virgin Atlantic now flies domestic routes in the US under the local brand of Virgin America and they provide you a nice free meal and snacks for local domestic flights while still being competitive with the other US airlines, so why cant they?

This is cool. Person to person renting, or as Wikipedia refers to it, peer to peer renting, is one person renting something they have to someone else, and vice versa. I mean think of it, we all have a bunch of stuff laying around that we don’t use all the time, and at the same time we have alot of things that we need one in a while that we dont want to buy just for that one time. The solution, rent it. Here’s where Rentalic (Rental In Community) comes in. With a slogan of Rent. Share. Be Green. the company is hoping to provide that perfect solution for person to person renting.

Hoping to create sustainable communities, but promoting reuse and recycling of items amongst the the people who live within an area, this proximity based service seems to be the right answer. All while reducing the overall carbon footprint of the people living in that area.

Rentalic, faced the public for the first time in a soft launch at Maker Faire 2009, in San Mateo CA. The responce was out of this world. People loved the idea and could not wait for the site to go live. The Rentalic website says that it will be going live soon, so here’s to keeping our fingers crossed. In the meanwhile you can pre-register at the site now to make sure you will be one of the first to beta test and use the site.

Update: November 11, 2009
Rentalic is now open for invitation only beta testing. I have some invites if you need some. Just leave me a comment and i’ll email you an invite. They also got a cool video explaining how it all works!

The ‘Sebalaneni’ song – New song and Video by Ranidu and Mobitel

Our Sri Lankan armed forces have defeated the terrorist organization the LTTE on the battle field and now dawns a new era, an era in which all Sri Lankans come together to rebuild our nation. As our president, Mahinda Rajapaksa said in this speech Tuesday morning addressed to the parliament; there are no minorities in Sri Lanka, only Sri Lankans.

When the LTTE struck, they struck indiscriminately. When they bombed public transport, they killed Sri Lankans. There were Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burgers, and Malays who suffered as a result of their attacks.

Extract from His Excellency’s speech:

“‘Our aim was to liberate our Tamil people from the clutches of the LTTE’  – President

“The war against the LTTE is not a war against Tamil people; Our aim was to liberate our Tamil people from the clutches of the LTTE; Our heroic forces have sacrificed their lives to protect Tamil civilians; The victory we have gained by defeating LTTE is the victory of this nation and the victory of all people living in this country. Protecting the Tamil speaking people of this country is my responsibility. That is my duty. All the people of this country should live in safety without fear and suspicion. All should live with equal rights. That is my aim. Let us all get together and build up this nation”, said H.E the President and Commander-in- Chief, Mahinda Rajapaksa delivering the opening address at the historic Parliamentary fourth session today (May 19). 2347708 “

We must never forget our armed forces who sacrificed everything to free all Sri Lankans from terrorism and to give us this chance of rebuilding out nation.

The Api Wenuwen Api Fund is a collaboration between the The Ministry of Defence and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to build 50,000 houses for the serving Tri-Service personnel. In an effort to help raise money for this fund Mobitel has teamed up with one of Sri Lanka’s most talented artists Ranidu, to create the Sebelaneni song. 100% of the proceeds raised from this song will be donated to the Api Wenuwen Api Fund, so I urge everyone to help out.

The following information about the song is provided from the press release taken from defence.lk

The ‘Sebalaneni’ song is available exclusively on Mobitel m tunes (caller ring back tone) and Mobitel customers can now select this song as their mTune by typing “21212″ and SMSing to 777. This service would be available at a fee of Thirty rupees per month and proceeds from this service also contribute to the ‘Api Wenuwen Api’ fund.

The music video of ‘Sebalaneni’ would be available in DVD format at all Mobitel outlets in the near future and all proceeds from the sale of each DVD is to be contributed to the ‘Api Wenuwen Api’ fund.

Mobitel customers would also be able to further contribute to the ‘Api Wenuwen Api’ fund by downloading ‘Sebalaneni’ Ring – tones from wap.mobitel.lk and also by downloading ‘Sebalaneni’ Wallpapers from wap.mobitel.lk in the near future.

‘Sebalaneni’ was composed and sung by Ranidu Lankage, while the lyrics were written by Anuradha Uduwage and the music video was directed by Subash Pinnapola.

we all know the LTTE, “ the Tamil Tigers are among the most dangerous and deadly extremists in the world” Source: FBI website (NOT a rebel group as often referred to by BBC their international news arm) has a very powerful propaganda division that they have used effectively many times in the past. here is another classic example of it at work.. SHAME ON YOU news agencies of the world who fell for this.
isn’t it journalism 101 to validate your sources????

It’s a “stage managed” Photo Shootout. Look right ; The girl shoots Victims actions with a Smile, using a Semi Professional Camera ( Nikon D Series …..? in the No Fire Zone – VELLAMULLIVAIKKAL……!!! ).

What an ACT. That’s the reality of LTTE’s (and Tamilnet’s) News.

All major News Papers in the world published only the first photograph…….!!!

The LTTE is known for using their own people who they are supposed to be fighting for as HUMAN SHIELDS source: Statement from the United Nations via the Daily Mirror. This includes children, women and the elderly.

“…council members [the united nations security council] “strongly condemned” the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who are apparently using civilians trapped in a 5 square mile (13 square km) strip of land as human shields…” – U.N. Ambassador Claude Heller

the empire state building goes green… really?

today’s news stated that the empire state building is going to go green. its going to save millions each year.  blah blah blah…  if your interested in reading the whole articles here it is.

this is all good and dandy.. but the bottom line is that they are going to spend USD $500 million to “make the building green” and only save USD $4.4 million a year. so that’s going to take about 113 years to cover up the USD $500 million. these are all very rough calculations. the article does not talk about the cost of disposing of all the old appliances and fittings etc… that will come out of the building.

this just looks like a HUGE publicity stunt to use the buzz word of going green. i mean if you really want to do somethign to benifit the environment, why dont you take that USD $500, 000, 000 and do something meaningful, like plant a rain forest, or help save an animal speciece that is going extinct, or something like that. Feed some starving children in Africa and Asia.

have you ever wondered just how much fat and grease is in those delicious burgers your eating?

well i came across this video just now that gives us a tiny little glimpse into how much grease is present by creating an art masterpiece using just burgers. that’s right, you do not have to go back and read that sentence again. its a painting created with grease. you could call it grease art if you want. all created with only 14 burgers!

Phil Hansen paints the Mona Greasa with burger grease.

if you just ate 14 burgers, you could have a mona lisa in your stomach!

think about it…

[news] Monkeys Floss. Do you?

flossing-monkeysBBC reported today on a very interesting article that looks into how female monkeys in Thailand tech their young. Teaching techniques on using tools properly has always been an activity carried out only by humans, Professor Nobuo Masataka of Kyoto University told the AFP news agency.

However these female monkeys have been observed flossing their teeth using human hair in the same way that we humans floss our own teeth. furthermore, researches from Japan also noticed that the mothers spend double the amount of time flossing when they were being watched by their infants. This suggests that they were deliberately teaching their young how to floss.

WOW.. This is really cool. monkeys can teach their young how to do things. What is even cooler is that they FLOSS. I mean how many humans floss?????

does Phelps deserve the criticism that he is receiving?

shame on you big time media and everyone else. picking on a 23 year old for a mistake that he has already apologized for. i mean seriously. lets look at the message your sending out to other upcoming young folks that have the potential to shine in their selected area. i mean lets take me. i’m not saying that i smoke pot, but if i had the potential to become a fantastic basket ball player. i’m going to start thinking twice if its worth it. do i really want all of you [media types] poking your noses into my business?

i’m betting that a lot of the people out there right now, criticizing Phelps has also smoked some marijuana at some point in their life.

its part of growing up. let the kid experience life and grow up. he seems to have a solid grounding and just because he smoked pot once does not mean he is a pot head. it just means he is finding his way as all kids do, and that means learning things for themselves.

please don’t get me wrong, i am in no way saying that what he did was right. all i’m saying is that by putting all this pressure on him your paving the way to failure. its the same reason that most kid star actors end up as washed up druggies. its because of all the pressure put on them. lay off.. and let the kid grow up as a regular person.

don’t you have better things to report on? you as the media are reporting on this story because you say he is a role model and on the moral issue and the message he is giving out to his fans. what about your[collective media] moral issues? i mean after all all your doing is creating a story out of nothing to fatten your wallets. i find that quite hypocritical.

things i learnt in transit

so here i am in London at the London Heathrow airport. the last time i flew through here, i had the most atrocious experience ever. i had 3 hours to catch my connection and spent more than 2 of of those 3 hours in the security line. in that respect the security this time around was a breeze. there was no one ahead of me and i went right through. on the flip side, i have 12 hours to kill at the airport here. for the last 6 hours or so i’ve been seated here in front of the HMV (a music) store and gone from taking naps to observing the people around me, and getting some work done.

so what have a learn from all this?

1. the police here love to browse the latest CD’s at the music store. every hour or so two police officers passing by will pop in and spend about 15 minutes or so browsing though the shelves and then leave without purchasing anything. they also like checking out the latest gadgets at Dixons (an electronics store) right next door.

2. Michael Jackson is very much alive in this part of the world. i’ve listened to the store play a marathon of his hits at least 3 times over with a speckling of some rap songs here and there. took me down memory lane as well. you do not realize just how many songs jackson has. more so, how many of them are number one hits. enough hits to play for hours it seems. quite an accomplishment for any artist.

3. it’s quite common to see 5 year old girls wearing purple velvet dresses with fancy pea coats walking around with their mums who are equally peacocked out themselves.

4. the word “Gentleman” is still pretty much part of the English vocabulary and is very much used in everyday chatter here. eg: talking on the walkie talkie “Can you hold the gate a few more minutes? I just passed another gentleman heading over to catch his flight” (Said with a thick british accent)

5. the Audi a8 is one sexy beast of a car.

6. there are as many airport staff talking in Hindi as there as talking in English.

7. i’ve hardly seen any obese people the whole time i’ve been here.

8. kids wearing those jeans that look like they are going to fall off at any moment actually look fitted for some reason. (they still look like they are going to fall off at any moment)

9. the older gents are much more adventurous with their mustaches. i saw some that were just plain CRAZY…

10. i have yet to see an overweight air hostess walk pass me.
