Underwater internet cables, Cut or Damaged?

I’ve been thinking about how “co-incidental” it was that 3 4 core deep sea internet cabled were “damaged by ship anchors” within days of each other. It just seemed a little too much of a coincidence,. Then I read an article [link] where the Egyptian Communication Ministry issued a statement saying that

“…Damage to undersea Internet cables in the Mediterranean that hit business across the Middle East and South Asia was not caused by ships, …”

They stated that

“…‘The ministry’s maritime transport committee reviewed footage covering the period of 12 hours before and 12 hours after the cables were cut and no ships sailed the area,’ a statement said.…”

Now I’m really curious. What’s going on? It seems like I am not the only one, TechDirt had an article on it today [link].

Everyone loves conspiracy theories, and there certainly was no shortage in those, like this link about the US Navy and submarines with cable cutters [link], and this [link] that one Diggster had posted about covert NSA operation tapping undersea fiber optic cables.

Another interesting theory was that the cabled were cut by someone wanting to delay the [link] opening of the Iran Oil Bourse, a trading location where oil, petrochemicals and gas can be traded in various non-dollar currencies.

I firmly believe that the truth is always stranger than fiction, so I wonder what is really going on here!
